Estonia has counted as many as 2,000 islands, specifically 2,222 (according to Wikipedia). Most of these are small islands, even smaller than 0.1 hectares. Some are too small to even build a house on, let alone a harbor that could accommodate larger yachts. Only 318 islands are larger than 1 hectare.
Altogether, 3% of the entire population of Estonia lives on the islands, with 97% of that population residing on the three largest islands: Saaremaa, Hiiumaa, and Muhumaa. This data is based on 2011 figures. The population of the islands, particularly the small islands, has been decreasing year by year; however, the number of permanently inhabited islands has steadily increased. In 2000, there were 14, and according to the latest data, there are now 19.
Currently, the permanently inhabited islands are as follows: Saaremaa, Hiiumaa, Muhu, Kihnu, Kassari, Vormsi, Prangli, Ruhnu, Piirissaar, Manija, Abruka, Kesselaid, Vilsandi, Naissaar, Väike Pakri, Osmussaar, Kõinastu, Aegna, and Mohni. Often, a small island may not even seem like an island, as it is partially connected to the mainland. Small islands are also referred to by various names, such as laid, rahu, karede, nasvad, mäkk, etc.
One interesting fact according to Wikipedia: Estonia's small islands and islands are all continental islands, as they are located on continental crust.
Most of the larger islands are located in Western Estonia. Among them are the four largest islands—Saaremaa, Hiiumaa, Muhumaa, and Vormsi. The islands in this region are also referred to as the Western Estonia archipelago. It is also called by another name. The name Moonsundi archipelago is derived from the Muhu Strait.
The larger islands in Northern Estonia are Väike Pakri, Suur Pakri, Naissaar, Prangli, and Aegna. The last three can be very conveniently visited starting from Tallinn. We organize the most sailing trips to these three islands. A special gem is Naissaar, which is also our clients' most popular choice. Starting from Pärnu, the two most popular islands are Kihnu and Manilaid, where we also arrange sailing trips.
